What is your open role costing you?

An empty seat costs the work that isn’t getting done, plus the hours your team spends interviewing for it. Set the salary, how much value the role creates, and how long it has been open.

The method

How it’s calculated

  1. Value lost per day = annual CTC × value multiple ÷ 365. The value multiple is how much the role creates in a year relative to its pay; you set it.
  2. Value lost = value per day × calendar days the role has been open.
  3. Interview cost = interview hours × the interviewers’ hourly cost (their annual CTC ÷ 2,000 working hours).
  4. Total = value lost + interview cost. Per week = value per day × 7.

Questions, answered.

How do you calculate the cost of a vacant position?

Take the value the role creates in a year, divide by 365 for a daily figure, and multiply by the days it has been open. Add the time your team has spent interviewing, at the interviewers’ hourly cost. The calculator shows the formula and lets you change every assumption.

What value multiple should I use?

Use the one you would defend to your finance team. A sales role with a quota has a number you can use directly. For other roles, pick a multiple of salary that reflects what the work is worth to the business. The calculator starts at 2× as a placeholder, not as a benchmark; change it.

Why include interview hours?

Because they are usually the most senior hours in the process. A hiring manager and two senior engineers spending an hour each on every candidate adds up quickly, and those hours come out of the work the role was meant to support.

How can we fill the role faster?

Reach the people who are not applying, keep the process to a few weeks, and move fast on offers. 100Networks matches hard roles to specialist recruiters who have filled them before, and the 100Networks Workspace builds a candidate pipeline overnight for the roles your team runs itself.
