When will your new hire actually join?
Hiring takes weeks; in India the notice period often takes longer than the process itself. Set your own timings to see the date someone is likely to start, and what a notice buyout would change.
See what shortening the notice would cost in the notice period buyout calculator.
How it’s calculated
- Shortlist ready = start date + days from brief to a shortlist.
- Offer made = shortlist + days from first interview to offer.
- Offer accepted = offer + days for the candidate to accept.
- Joins = acceptance + notice period − notice days bought out.

Questions, answered.
How long does it take to hire someone in India?
The process itself usually takes a few weeks, from brief to accepted offer. The notice period then adds 30 days at junior levels and commonly 60 to 90 days at senior levels, which is why the join date is often two to four months after the search starts.
Can we shorten the notice period?
Sometimes. The old employer may agree to an early release, or the notice can be bought out. Use the notice period buyout calculator to see what that costs, and compare it with what each week of the role staying open costs you.
What should we do while a candidate serves notice?
Stay in touch. Counter-offers tend to arrive during the notice period, not before it. Weekly contact from the hiring manager, an early welcome to the team and a clear first project make a late withdrawal much less likely.
Which part of the timeline can we control?
Everything before the notice period. A clear brief, a short interview loop with one rubric, and an offer within days of the last round take weeks off the date someone joins.
